After many decades in the real estate industry, including as Principal of a successful partnership in Geelong, Bill McKewan started McKewan & Son Ocean Grove in 1995. Quickly developing a strong reputation in the community as a reliable real estate company, in 1997 he was joined by Hugh McKewan and the name shortly changed to McKewans Real Estate.

In 2002 Bill and Hugh opened an office in Barwon Heads and shortly afterwards began discussions with the Hayden family (currently operating offices out of Torquay & Anglesea) with a view to expanding the presence of the Hayden name. These discussions reached a successful conclusion and in December 2004 McKewans Real Estate was rebranded as Hayden Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads, with Hugh McKewan also taking a role as Director of the Hayden franchise group.

The directors were given the opportunity to purchase Ken Guyett's long established and successful business and the companies merged in December 2006 to become the dominant agency on the Bellarine Peninsula. In 2007, they were approached by local agent Darren Arnold and incorporated the rent roll of his LJ Hooker franchise, further establishing Hayden as the Bellarine Peninsula's leading estate agency.

Around this time Hugh was negotiating the sale of a home to a client by the name of Andrew Hamilton. With his background in business management, Andrew was the perfect fit to guide the administration of the business and joined the company as General Manager in March 2008. Towards the end of 2009, after over 40 years in the industry Bill retired from active involvement in the business, and in recognition of his achievements as General Manager, Andrew was promoted to a Director of the company.

During this journey the Hayden team have strived to provide their customer base with exceptional knowledge and service. The Property Managers are an expert team; the Sales Consultants continue to produce market leading results; and administrative support team implements the systems and back up to ensure nothing slips through the cracks, so that the needs of tenants and landlords, vendors and purchasers can be met and exceeded.
