Just a short distance away from the heart of Geelong, Lara easily has the best view of the impressive You Yangs. The impressive granite peaks are surrounded by a mecca of lovely picnic grounds, family friendly walking tracks and loads of wildlife.
If you’re seeking adventure, there are a number of mountain-bike trails and rock-climbing opportunities, all of which have been upgraded.
More than 200 bird species have been identified in the You Yangs, along with kangaroos, koalas, possums and sugar gliders. The vegetation includes a variety of eucalypts such as manna gums, yellow gums and river red gums.
In September the fields come alive with blankets of bright yellow canola flowers – a cheery spring sight after the cold months of winter.
Located just a few minutes from the You Yangs is the gorgeous Serendip Sanctuary, a favourite with families and alike.
The place just teems with native birds and animals, where visitors can stroll past marshlands, ponds and lakes, come face-to-face with some of the 450 kangaroos and see beautiful brolga in a bush setting. You may also come across koalas and emus too.
With excellent free barbecue and picnic facilities available, and free entry to both the You Yangs and Serendip, it is a not-to-be missed experience.
