Wye River

These not-so- famous escapes on the Great Ocean Road are quiet achievers – for those ‘in the know’ Wye River, Kennett River and Wongarra hide a perfectly laid-back and bare-foot ambience in contrast with the busier coastal hubs.
Snap Happy
Photographers of all levels find a bounty of click-worthy landscapes along this coastline – there are some exceptional vantage points. Kennett River’s Grey River Road is the perfect place to watch the local koalas laze. Drive up Sunnyside Road behind Wongarra for a stunning ocean view. This is also popular country with mountain bikers. As you head from Kennett River towards Apollo Bay, it’s worth stopping at both the Mt Defiance Lookout and Cape Patton Lookout. Your camera will lap up the views.
Take a Dip
There are some terrific surfing, swimming and fishing spots in this area. The beaches at Wye River and Kennett River are patrolled and, even in summer, they’re uncrowded.
Put a Spring in Your Step
It’s wonderful just walking around these parts – keep your eyes open for koalas and other wildlife, particularly along Grey River Road near Kennett River. For a wildlife experience with a difference, take the kids on a night-time visit to the picnic ground with a torch, and marvel at the glow worms in all their glory. Other walks include an easy stroll to Carisbrook Falls (be aware that there may be limited flows in summer). If local history grabs your fancy, take the Wye River Heritage Walk and reminisce the days of cutting, milling and transporting timber in the Otways.
